Inflammation in one or more joints can be termed as arthritis. There are various types of arthritis whereas, the major ones would be osteoarthritis and rheumatoid arthritis. Arthritis is usually seen in adults, especially people who are aged 65 and above. It is more common in women than in men. People with excess weight tend to develop arthritis sooner compared to others. 

Symptoms
The most common signs and symptoms for arthritis include the following:
  • Severe pain
  • Swelling
  • Stiffness
  • Restricted movements
  • Redness of the skin
  • Low blood count

Causes

There is no single cause for all types of arthritis as it differs for each type of arthritis. The possible causes might be as follows:
  • Excess weight
  • Injuries
  • Inheritance
  • Infections
  • Normal wear and tear of tissues
  • Immune system dysfunction
Medical care
Arthritis treatment focuses on the symptoms and to improve the functioning of the joints. It involves medications and physical therapies. Surgery would be recommended when other treatments fail. The various treatments include the following:
  • Medications - The medicines vary depending on arthritis. The usual medications would include the following:
  • Painkillers - these medicines are used to reduce the pain and it may not have any effect on inflammation
  • Certain anti-inflammatory drugs - nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs) will help reduce both pain and inflammation. Certain NSAIDs are also available in creams and gels that could be applied on the joints
  • Creams or ointments - there are a few creams and ointments such as menthol or capsaicin which can block the transmission of pain signals from the joints
  • Immunosuppressants - these are used to reduce inflammation and suppresses the immune system
  • Therapy - physical therapy would be helpful for certain arthritis. It involves exercises that can help strengthen the muscles and improve the movements surrounding the joints.
  • Surgery - when all the other treatments fail, doctors would suggest surgery.
  • Joint replacement - usually, surgeries involve replacing the affected joint with an artificial one. This is most commonly performed to replace the joints near the hips and knees.
  • Joint repair - in certain instances joint surfaces can be smoothened or realigned. This would help to reduce the pain and improves functioning. This can be performed arthroscopically
  • Joint fusion - if arthritis is severe on fingers, ankles or wrists, doctors would advise joint fusion. The ends of two bones in the joint are removed and locked together until it heals and become one.
